• Raúl Alarcón has been sanctioned with a four year ban expiring on 20 October 2023, the international cycling union’s (UCI) updated list of sanctions reveals. In October 2019, the Spanish cyclist revealed that he had been provisionally suspended by the UCI, but claimed that he was innocent of committing an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV). His results from 28 July 2015 until 21 October 2019 have been annulled, which means he will lose first place finishes in the 2017 & 2018 Volta a Portugal; the 2017 Vuelta a Asturias; and in the 2018 GP Nacional 2 de Portugal.
• A handball player and a cyclist have been provisionally suspended after reporting adverse analytical findings (AAFs), while a futsal player’s provisional suspension has been revoked, Italy’s anti-doping agency (NADO Italia) announced. Matteo Giglio returned an AAF for a metabolite of THC (active component of cannabis) after a 6 February handball game; and elite mountain biker Elena Gaddoni returned an AAF for Acetazolamide following a 15 February out of competition test. Italy’s anti-doping tribunal (TNA) revoked a provisional suspension issued to junior futsal player Sofia Ercolani, after she successfully applied for a retroactive therapeutic use exemption (TUE).
• The Swiss Federal Tribunal has ordered that Sun Yang must pay €9,000 in legal costs, reports Swimming World. The Swiss Federal Tribunal ordered the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to rehear the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) successful appeal against an international swimming federation (FINA) Decision to clear him of a doping offence, which initially resulted in Sun being issued with an eight year ban. That ban was set aside after it was revealed that the CAS Panel President had tweeted inappropriate comments about the Chinese.
