Rumšas Junior is fourth family member implicated in doping

Italy’s national anti-doping tribunal (TNA) has sanctioned four athletes for doping, and its national anti-doping organisation (NADO Italia) has suspended another athlete after a positive test. The TNA sanctioned cyclist Raimondas Rumšas Junior with a four year ban, expiring 22 October 2021. Rumšas was provisionally suspended in October last year after returning an adverse analytical finding (AAF) for GHRP-6.

Rumšas Junior is the son of the Lithuanian professional cyclist of the same name, and is the fourth family member to be implicated in doping. In July 2002, Edita Rumšienė, the wife of Rumšas Senior, was charged and later imprisoned for possession of corticoids, erythropoietin (EPO), testosterone, growth hormones and anabolic steroids, which were found in her car boot.

In May 2003, Rumšas Senior tested positive for EPO, and served a one year ban. He is also understood to be under investigation by Italian prosecutors over the death of his other son last year. Linus Rumšas, 21, died following a cardiac arrest in Lucca, Italy, and it is understood that illegal products were found in the family’s apartment.

NADO Italia also announced that the TNA sanctioned 26 year old distance runner Michele Stingone with a four year ban expiring 22 January 2022. It also sanctioned amateur cyclist Francesco Manco with a four year ban, expiring on 25 October 2021. Manco was provisionally suspended after returning an AAF for two metabolites of stanozolol – furosemide and triamcinolone acetonide – at the ‘Fondo Città di Cerignola’ in Cerignola on 24 September 2017.

Another cyclist, Daniele Mariani, has been sanctioned with a one year ban. Mariani returned an adverse analytical finding (AAF) for a metabolite of clostebol last year.

NADO Italia also announced that Futsal player Gennaro Centore has been provisionally suspended after returning an AAF for cocaine and its metabolites. Centore tested positive at the end of a Futsal Serie B game on 2 December last year.
