Italy’s TNA sanctions Benevento’s captain, medic & eight others

Italy’s national anti-doping tribunal (TNA) has sanctioned the captain and medic of Serie A side Benevento, after a spray designed to heal a would resulted in an adverse analytical finding (AAF). The TNA issued a four year ban to Benevento’s medic, Walter Giorgione, expiring on 15 January 2022, and sanctioned Benevento captain Fabio Lucioni with a one year ban expiring on 15 October this year.

It is understood that Giorgione administered a spray to Lucioni, which was designed to help a cut heal quickly. However, the spray resulted in Lucioni returning an AAF for clostebol following a test after the Serie A match against Torino on 10 September last year.

The TNA also issued sanctions to eight other athletes, and provisionally suspended a bodybuilder, following an AAF. Francesco Bocca was sanctioned with a four year ban, expiring on 15 November 2021. The mixed martial arts fighter is affiliated to the Italian wushu federation (FIWUK), and was provisionally suspended after returning an AAF for furosemide on 14 October last year.

Antonio Capuozzo has also been sanctioned with a four year ban, expiring on 15 November 2021. The futsal player tested positive at the ‘Serie a 5, Feldi Eboli – Pescara C5’ tournament held in Eboli on 2 October last year.

The TNA has also sanctioned Lhoussaine Oukhrid with a four year ban, expiring 30 October 2021. The distance runner returned an AAF for recombinant erythropoietin (EPO) at the Italian Marathon Championships in Agropoli on 15 October last year.

The TNA also sanctioned weightlifters Giovanni Vernile, Cinzia Pecoraro and Sara Fallaha with four year bans, expiring 8 November 2021. Vernile and Pecoraro were provisionally suspended last year after returning adverse analytical findings (AAF) for ostarine. Fallaha was provisionally suspended after returning AAFs for metabolites of stanozolol and methyltestosterone.

Cyclist Domenico Garofalo has been sanctioned with a six month ban, expiring 17 May 2018. Garofalo returned an adverse analytical finding (AAF) for ephedrine and oxilofrine at the 19th Colle di Fuori time trial held in Rocca Priora on 16 September last year.

The TNA also decided to sanction a minor canoeist with a two month ban, which it said had now expired as it had been fully served. The canoeist was provisionally suspended in September last year.

Finally, bodybuilder Analisa Barone was provisionally suspended by the TNA after returning an AAF for hydrochlorothiazide and chlorothiazide at the ‘Mr & Mrs Etrurya 2017’ event, held in Viterbo on 5 November last year.
