USADA announced today that Angela Carlberg, of Mount Rainier, MD, an athlete in the sport of weightlifting, has accepted a public warning for an anti-doping rule violation. Calberg, 24, tested positive for vilanterol as the result of an in-competition urine sample collected at the USA Weightlifting National Championships on May 11, 2019. Vilanterol is a Specified Substance in the category of Beta-2 Agonists and is prohibited at all times under the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic Movement Testing, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee National Anti-Doping Policies, and the International Weightlifting Federation Anti-Doping Rules, all of which have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code and the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List.

After a thorough review of the case, including Carlberg’s medical records, USADA determined that a reduced sanction was appropriate because Carlberg used a prescription inhaler containing vilanterol trifenatate at the direction of a physician to treat severe asthma and cooperated with USADA throughout the results management process. Carlberg had not obtained a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) in advance of using her medication. Because her positive sample was collected in-competition, Carlberg has had her competitive results obtained on that date disqualified, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.
