The trouble with Ostarine: Jimmy Wallhead’s
16th March 2018
Eight athletes from five countries, competing in seven sports were involved in anti-doping procedures announced this week. The major news involves Italy’s 2021 Time Trial champion Francesco Pescialioli, who was sanctioned with a four year ban for evading a test.
This could be far less dramatic than it sounds. ‘Test evasion’ evokes images of athletes running away from doping control officials (DCOs). However, comments to Article 2.3 of the Code reveal that it also covers ‘negligent conduct’ by the athlete. As such, it could potentially be something as simple as an athlete intentionally leaving the view of a DCO during a test attempt.
Pescialioli has yet to comment, other than issuing a cryptic message on Instagram (below). The Sports Integrity Initiative has contacted NADO Italia in an attempt to gather detail.
Another Australian has been sanctioned for an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) involving Lingradol (LGD-4033), the substance at the centre of the Shayna Jack case. Joe Lawless, a 20 year old footballer for Canberra United in the Y-League, was sanctioned with a three year ban due to an adverse analytical finding (AAF – or ‘positive test’) dating back to January 2020.
This doesn’t mean that Australia has a particular problem with Lingradol. Athletes who have returned AAFs for the Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator (SARM) have consistently blamed supplements, and in 2019 the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) issued a warning about the experimental substance’s inclusion in them.
