Sports Integrity Briefs – 6 September 2018

• The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has announced the suspension of two weightlifters, after they reported adverse analytical findings (AAFs) for prohibited substances. Abdulmuttalip Dokmetas of Turkey returned an AAF for GHRP-6, a prohibited growth hormone releasing peptide. Bosco Miljus of Serbia returned an AAF for LGD 4033, a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) that is currently at the developmental stage for treating endocrine and metabolic disorders.

• New Zealand Police announced that it has charged ten people as part of Operation Inca, an investigation into race-fixing in the harness racing industry (also known as ‘trotting’). A total of 17 properties have been raided due to a long-running investigation by the National Organised Crime Group. ‘The investigation began with information supplied by the Racing Integrity Unit’, read a statement. ‘Police have been working in partnership with the RIU and other relevant organisations throughout the investigation’. New Zealand’s Racing Integrity Unit (RIU) announced that it has excluded all those charged from attending race meetings, workouts and trials.

• Bury FC Manager Ryan Lowe has served the second game of a two game ban issued by England’s Football Association (FA), at the League Two club’s 2-1 loss to Rochdale. The ban was issued due to an aggressive and abusive reaction to anti-doping officials attending a 9 February training session, and was confirmed in a club statement.

• The number of adverse analytical findings (AAFs) reported by Russian athletes has almost doubled from 59 in 2017 to 113 in the first eight months of 2018, the Director General of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) told AP. Yuri Ganus told the news agency that the rise was “alarming”.

• USA Gymnastics has appointed a committee to replace Katy Perry, following her resignation as CEO. ‘The board is in the process of forming a search committee of board members, as well as athletes and others from the gymnastics and NGB community to search for a permanent president and CEO’, read a statement. ‘Board member and Olympian Brent Lang, president and CEO of Vocera, will chair the committee. The committee has been charged with finding a leader who can help the organization build on the progress to date and achieve the fundamental cultural changes necessary to move the sport forward. The Board of Directors also established a management committee to provide organizational oversight to maintain continuity in the day-to-day operations until an interim CEO is named. The management committee members include Karen Golz, chair; David Rudd, vice chair and secretary, and board member, Kathryn Carson.’
