Sports Integrity Briefs – 6 April 2018

• The US Centre for SafeSport has suspended taekwondo coach Jean Lopez after finding him guilty of sexual misconduct and sexual misconduct with a minor. It is understood that USA Taekwondo began an investigation into Lopez, the older brother and coach of two-time Olympic taekwondo champion Steven Lopez, three years ago. The decision to declare Lopez as permanently ineligible, listed by SafeSport as being taken on 3 April, is subject to appeal. Lopez’s suspension is also listed on the Team USA website of the US Olympic Committee (USOC).

• The Australian National Sikh Sports and Cultural Council (ANSSCC) was forced to cancel the kabaddi final at Australian Sikh Games, which took place 30 March to 1 April in Sydney, after players refused to take a doping test. “Just after the semi-final matches, some players refused to give drug-samples leaving us no choice to take this tough decision”, Navjot Kailay, kabaddi co-ordinator of the ANSSCC told SBS Punjabi. According to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) 2016 testing figures, the traditional Indian sport of kabaddi reported 21 adverse analytical findings (AAF) from 267 samples during the year (7.9%).

• The Austrian anti-doping agency (ÖADR) has sanctioned two pool players with two year bans, after they tested positive for cannabis. Thomas Aschauer’s ban (click here to download the decision) will expire on 19 February 2020, and Daniel Guttenberger’s ban (click here to download decision) will expire on 12 February 2019.
