Sports Integrity Briefs – 4 March 2021

• Student and youth athletes were used as guinea pigs by the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in order to develop State Plan 14.25, which involved administration of performance enhancing drugs to elite athletes, a documentary (below) has discovered. Student athletes such as Hans Albrecht-Kühne testify that they have suffered a range of health problems due to experimental procedures. These not only involved administration of dangerous amounts of steroids, some of which were not designed for human consumption, but also biopsies that has led to a collapse of the lymphatic system and other health issues. The ‘Secret Trials in GDR Sport’ documentary is part of the Geheimsache Doping (Top Secret Doping) series produced by Hajo Seppelt, Jörg Mebus, and Josef Opferman for ARD.

Norway will not be boycotting the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, despite calls from its clubs, after The Guardian reported that over 6,500 workers have died at construction sites in Qatar since it was awarded hosting rights in 2010. ‘We do not agree that a boycott is the right tool’, read a statement from the Norwegian football association (NFF). ‘It is difficult to see how it would be in the interest of migrant workers if the Qatar World Cup was cancelled. On the contrary, it would send hundreds of thousands of workers into acute unemployment. Most expert circles therefore encourage football to use the World Cup as a means of pressure for continued legislative change in Qatar and implementation of the reforms already adopted.’

• The World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO) has cancelled its contract for the Russian kickboxing federation (FKR) to host the World Championships (Seniors and Masters) on 5-14 November 2021. WAKO said that it had taken the decision to cancel the Moscow event due to the prohibition on Russia hosting World Championships, which was one of the consequences the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) imposed on Russia due to the Russian Anti-Doping Agency’s (RUSADA) failure to procure an authentic copy of the Moscow Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS – see para. 757 of the Decision). WAKO said that a new host will be announced later this month, following a new, open bidding process.
