• A youth swimmer and a senior ice hockey player have been sanctioned for anti-doping rule violations (ADRVs), the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) has announced. Ivan Arshava (Ивана Аршаву) has been sanctioned with a two year ban from 13 March 2020, after a sample he gave recorded an adverse analytical finding (AAF) for meldonium. It is understood that the 18 year old swimmer won seven titles at a 2015 international meet in Dresden. RUSADA’s list of sanctioned athletes confirms that Arshava (pictured in 2016) would have been 17 when his ban began. Andrey Markov (Андрей Марков), a former national team defender who also played with the Montreal Canadiens in the US National Hockey League (NHL), has been sanctioned with an 18 month ban from 29 June for ‘whereabouts’ failures (an explanation of these rules is here).

Gian Piero Gasperini, Coach of Serie A football club Atalanta, has been sanctioned with an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) for offensive behaviour towards a doping control officer (DCO), announced Italy’s national anti-doping agency (NADO Italia). It is understood that DCOs attempt to test four Atalanta players at a training session on 7 February. Gasperini instructed his players to ignore the DCOs and return to training, and the tests were completed at the end of the session. Gasperini has been sanctioned with a reprimand and will not serve a ban.

• The Russian handball federation (ФГР) has accepted the resignation of Vitaly Ivanov (Виталия Иванова) as Coach of its youth team. On 22 September, Russia provisionally suspended eight players who took part in the U19 European Championships in Croatia whom it suspected of deliberately underperforming in order to profit from betting. Russia unexpectedly finished 15th out of 16 teams competing in the tournament, hosted from 12-22 August in Croatia. A previous statement mentioned that a Report from the ФГР Ethics Committee on the allegations against the eight players was due to be delivered today.
