Dylan Walker and Aaron Gray of Australian National Rugby League (NRL) club South Sydney Rabbitohs, are out of intensive care after they were found vomiting after being prescribed painkillers following post-season surgery last week. Walker’s sister told News.com.au that her brother had taken oxycodone and tramadol, however this has not been confirmed by the club. Oxycodone is a narcotic prohibited under section S7 of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Prohibited List. Tramadol does not feature on the List, however was listed in the Cycling Independent Reform Commission (CIRC) report as a substance abused by cyclists. Both are powerful opioid-based painkillers.
‘The South Sydney Rabbitohs have confirmed that two of its players, Dylan Walker and Aaron Gray, were admitted to hospital this morning, and both are in a stable condition’, read a 22 September statement from the club. ‘Both players had post season surgery last week, following the end of the Club’s season, in preparation for pre-season training to commence later this year.’
An update posted by the club today confirmed that both players are out of intensive care and have been moved to a provide ward. “There will be an appropriate time to debrief on what has happened in this situation, but at the moment our focus remains on the wellbeing of the young men”, said Rabbitohs CEO John Lee.
