Demonising Justin Gatlin
13th September 2015
Peruvian swimmer Mauricio Fiol announced on social media (see below) that he has tested positive for stanozolol for a second time, and so will miss the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. He was due to come in the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays, as well as the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay.
Fiol was sanctioned with a four year ban for an anti-doping rule violation involving stanozolol at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, where he won a Silver medal in the 200m butterfly. His ban ended on 11 July 2019.
Fiol maintains that he never intended to consume stanozolol, arguing that to take it again would be ‘suicide’. The full decision in his 2015 case shows that analysis undertaken on 11 nutritional supplements he had been taking returned negative results for stanozolol.
As well as the 11 supplements, Fiol had also received vitamin B injections and anti-inflammatory drug Norflex, prescribed and administered by a sports doctor recommended to him by Peruvian teammates. Fiol told the panel that the source of the positive test could have been further supplements he had been taking that had been discarded, or “horse meat in sausages”. The FINA Panel concluded that as he had failed to prove the source of the stanozolol, he was not eligible for a reduction in his ban from four to two years.
