David Howman, Director General of the World Anti-Doping Agency, has said that organised crime controls 25% of world sport. “The biggest threat to sport is organised crime”, Howman told delegates at the Securing Sport conference on Monday 6 October. “I think that organised crime controls 25% of sport, in one way or another. These guys who are distributing drugs…are the same guys who are paying money to people to fix games.”
When questioned, Howman told media that the 25% figure comes from the information that WADA receives from international police organisation Interpol. The Sports Integrity Initiative is awaiting validation of this figure from Interpol and WADA. You can watch Howman’s conference speech by clicking here.
