Peruvian swimmer Mauricio Fiol Villanueva, who tested positive for stanozolol at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, has released a video through his Facebook page, accompanied by the tagline ‘my defence is just beginning’. Fiol returned a positive test on 12 July and was subsequently banned from taking part in the final of the 100m butterfly. He has asked for his B sample to be analysed and faces losing the silver medal he won in the 200m butterfly – Peru’s sole swimming medal at the Games.
“The best day of my career became the worst day of my life”, says Fiol in the video. “The head of mission told me that I had tested positive, and my name has been muddied by a steroid I never consumed…Now it’s time to defend myself because I will not stop in my pursuit of the truth and if anyone doubts me, do not ask me, just let me exercise my right to a defence. If I’m going to talk, my defence has just begun.”
On 8 September, the Pan American Sports Organisation (PASO) confirmed six more adverse analytical findings (AAFs) at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, taking the total to 17 confirmed positive tests. The total number of positive tests at Toronto 2015 are outlined in the table below.
