The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) confirms a total of 56 technological fraud controls were performed during the recent 2021 UCI Road World Championships in Flanders (Belgium). All returned negative results.

“The 2021 UCI Road World Championships in Flanders was the second time the UCI conducted technological fraud checks using its newly acquired Backscatter X-Ray technology,” said UCI Innovation Manager Michael Rogers. “The portable nature of backscatter devices allowed the UCI staff to perform checks on the bikes of all medal winners and random selected riders – across all categories and events – within minutes of the athletes crossing the finish line.”

The UCI would also like to clarify that the bike of Julian Alaphilippe, winner of the Men Elite road race on Sunday 26 September, was tagged within seconds of the race finish and delivered to X-ray control within six minutes of the race finishing.
