Please note the warning on the EHPlabs’ Limited Edition OxyShred Pina Colada label about the use of this product containing Higenamine. It’s a timely reminder about the varying of a manufacturer’s ingredients from product to product, flavour to flavour.
The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority once again reminds all athletes about the risk of using supplements – and to always check the ingredient labels and any other label on the container. Because supplement manufacturing processes can lead to their contents varying from batch to batch, ASADA cannot give any specific supplement the all-clear.
However, to reduce your risk, check your supplement on the ASADA app. Using the app will help you to find a low risk supplement sold in Australia which has been screened for banned ingredients. To download the App, go to the iTunes App store or the Google Play Store.
Be aware, higenamine and other banned substances have been found in a number of other products where it has not been listed as an ingredient. If detected in an athlete’s sample, they face up to a four year ban from sport.
Higenamine, which is prohibited in and out of competition, was one of the substances most commonly identified in positive tests in 2016 and 2017. Higenamine is typically described as a “natural” extract or by-product and also goes by the following names:
Research into higenamine has shown that, as a Beta2-agonist it opens the airways and allow the lungs to take in more oxygen. However, as a cardiotonic, higenamine can increase heart rate, putting an athlete at an increased risk of arrhythmias and even death.
