Sports Integrity Briefs – 26 February 2019

• The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has announced that Moldovan weightlifter, Artiom Pipa, has been charged with use or attempted use of a prohibited substance. Pipa is already serving a four year ban issued in December 2015, which expires on 21 December 2019.

• The Irish Football Association (IFA), which regulates the game in Northern Ireland, is investigating evidence which suggests that an Institute FC player asked a friend to place a bet on Ballymena United to win a match against his club, reports SBC News. Institute FC lost the 9 February Northern Ireland Football League Premiership (NIFL) Premiership match 2-1. It is understood that there is no suggestion that match-fixing has taken place, but concern that rules preventing players from betting on games may have been broken.

• Victoria Police’s Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit (SIIU) has charged two men with attempting to fix a National Premier League Division 2 soccer match on 19 August 2017. The 19 August 2017 match between Dandenong Thunder and Melbourne City’s U20 team took place on 19 August 2017, and finished 2-2. The National Premier League Division 2 represents soccer’s fourth tier in Victoria, and the fifth tier nationally.

• FIFA has decided that Peru will no longer host this year’s U17 World Cup. ‘Following various inspection visits by FIFA and further meetings with the Peruvian Football Association (FPF), and in view of a number of organisational and infrastructure challenges linked to the event delivery, the Bureau of the FIFA Council has decided that the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2019 will no longer be staged in Peru’, read a statement. ‘FIFA is currently evaluating different alternatives concerning the appointment of a new host country. Further information will be provided by FIFA in due course’.
