The Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) has received alerts from gambling regulators and betting operators about 38 tennis matches during the first quarter of 2018, 0.155% of the 24,489 matches played during that period. As can be seen in the table on the right, the majority of those alerts involved matches played in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Men’s Challenger and International Tennis Federation (ITF) Men’s Futures tournaments.
Match Alerts are provided to the TIU through memorandums of understanding (MOU) with gambling regulators and operators. The provision of an Alert means that suspicious betting patterns have been detected on a game, which results in follow-up action from the TIU. The provision of an alert does not necessarily mean that match-fixing has taken place. It could also indicate incorrect odds setting, well-informed betting, player fitness issues, player conditions or other personal circumstances relating to the competing players.
The TIU also announced that it has recruited three new members of staff. Karen Risby is a former detective who has been employed as an Investigator; Stephen Downes has been recruited as an Intelligence Analyst; and Richard Sackey-Addo has been appointed as an Education Coordinator.
