Australian government receives Review on national sports integrity body

Australia’s Federal Government has received a Review commissioned in August last year to examine the feasibility of establishing a national sports integrity commission.  ‘The Review represents the most comprehensive examination of Australia’s sports integrity arrangements ever undertaken, and makes 52 recommendations in line with the terms of reference’, read a statement issued today. ‘The Government will now consider the findings and recommendations. The Government looks forward to working with all stakeholders to continue to protect the integrity and reputation of Australian sport and our proud sporting heritage.’

The Review’s findings have not been made public. It was commissioned as part of the Australia’s National Sports Plan by Minister for Sport, Greg Hunt. It’s remit was to also examine national and international integrity threats to sport, including the rise of illegal offshore wagering, match-fixing and doping. The Review was complied by James Wood, Chairman of the Law Reform Commission of  who was assisted by David Howman, former Director General of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and Ray Murrihy, former Racing New South Wales Chief Steward.
