Two Italians have been banned and six have been provisionally suspended, Italy’s national anti-doping agency (NADO Italia) has confirmed. Giulia Cima was sanctioned with a ten year ban for violations of Articles 2.8 and 4.3.2 of Italy’s Norme Sportive Antidoping (NSA), which covers administration or attempted administration of a prohibited substance to an athlete, and trafficking. Cima has competed in the Miss Universe bodybuilding competitions. Another bodybuilder, Michela Pace, was sanctioned with a 16 month ban after returning an adverse analytical finding (AAF).
The provisional suspensions involved three cyclists, a mixed martial arts fighter, a bodybuilder, and a rower. Andrea Innocenti was provisionally suspended after returning an AAF for exogenous testosterone at the Ritrovo Coppa Nazioni U23 cycling event on 28 May; Francesca Buonfiglio was provisionally suspended after returning an AAF for metabolite of clostebol at the Gran Fondo 6th Mari e Monti cycling event on 3 June; and Gianpaolo Coralli was provisionally suspended after returning an AAF for recombinant erythropoietin (EPO) at the 8th Trofeo Comune Moncrivello cycling event on 2 June.
El Romani Gerges Mikhael Ihab was provisionally suspended after testing positive for eight substances at the Lupus Magnus II mixed martial arts event on 26 May. Ihab returned an AAF for a metabolite of boldenone; 19-noretiocolanolone; clenbuterol; 1,4,6-Androstatriene-3,17-dione; metabolites of cocaine; ephedrine; oxilofrine; and exogenous testosterone.
Bodybuilder Palma Vivoli was provisionally suspended after returning an AAF for torasemide, a diuretic, at the Campionato Italiano Cultura Fisica maschile e femminile 2018 on 27 May. Rower Nicolò Bo was provisionally suspended after returning an AAF for fenoterol at the 63rd Palio Antiche Repubbliche Marinare on 3 June.
