Demonising Justin Gatlin
13th September 2015
European Athletics notes that the Court of Arbitration for Sport has upheld a four-year ban imposed on the Russian athlete Mariya Savinova for doping offenses. In addition, all of Mrs Savinova’s performances from July 2010 to August 2013 have been annulled. This includes results from the 2010 European Athletics Championship, the 2011 World Championships in Athletics and the 2012 Olympic Games.
Although it is still subject to appeal, the ruling is a disappointing confirmation that our sport of athletics, its values and the trust of millions of followers have been betrayed. European Athletics is aware that the affected performances include those that led to Mrs Savinova being named European Athlete of the Year in 2011 and to her coach, Vladimir Kazarin, receiving the European Athletics Coaching Award in 2010.
These cases will now be included in an ongoing review of the integrity of all past European Athletes of the Year and the winners of other European Athletics awards and honours. It is expected that recommendations for action will be discussed by the European Athletics Council when it meets in Paris from 28-30 April.
At that time the Council will also receive progress reports on the work for our review of European Athletics records and our ‘I Run Clean’ mandatory anti-doping education programme. We believe that athletics offers life-enhancing value to participants of all levels and to audiences around Europe. Doping and other forms of cheating are serious challenges to the integrity of all sports and we remain committed to doing everything we can in the fight against them.
