Sports Integrity Briefs – 14 September

• The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has reported another Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) as a result of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) retests of samples taken at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The IWF confirmed that Anatoli Ciricu of Moldova, a bronze medal winner at the 2012 Games, has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone, an anabolic agent banned by section S1.1 of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Prohibited List.

• Bookmaker Sanjeev Chawla has been arrested in London following an extradition request from India relating to fixing cricket matches between India and South Africa from 16 February to March 20, 2000, reports The Indian Express. The case dates back to the first major match-fixing scandal in cricket when Delhi Police intercepted a conversation between Chawla and Hansie Cronje in which the South African cricket captain accepted an offer of money to lose matches. “The arrest was made following the Indian government’s extradition request”, a Crown Prosecution Service spokesperson told the newspaper. “Chawla’s case will be heard at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on 3 October”.
