Alysia Montaño is to receive two Bronze Medals at a 30 September medal reallocation ceremony at the Doha 2019 IAAF World Championships, the US middle distance runner confirmed on Instagram. Montaño placed fourth in the 800m at the Daegu 2011 IAAF World Championships and at the 800m in the Moscow 2013 IAAF World Championships, however Mariya Savinova (Мария Савинова) took first place in 2011 and second in 2013. 

In 2017, the Russian was sanctioned with a four year ban and her results from 26 July 2010 until 19 August 2013 were annulled. As a consequence, South Africans Caster Semenya and Sunette Viljoen are also due to receive a Daegu 2011 Gold and Silver at the ceremony. Athletics South Africa (ASA) said (click here to download release) that it will receive Semenya’s medal for her, and will hand it to her at a ceremony in South Africa. 

‘From 2007-2016 I had the ultimate displeasure of racing against dopers who ultimately dominated the top of the scoreboard’, wrote Montaño on Instagram (below). ‘These athletes who were doping stole precious moments and money from clean athletes including me, who never got the outdoor podium moment that I earned. The @iaaf_athletics took monetary bribes from the athletes that were doping at the time to cover up theirs failed results. If it were not for whistle blower Yulia Stepanova, who secretly recorded her teammates as they explained their operation, what they took and how they got away with it, I would not have the opportunity to stand on and receive my podium moment and my medals that I honestly earned. Huge thank you to Yulia Stepanova and other whistleblowers who risked their lives to uncover this scandal.’
