SUMMARY:Football law conference and sportspersons' dinner
DESCRIPTION:St John’s Buildings\, in conjunction with the Centre for Sports Law Research at Edge Hill University\, presents a Football Law Conference that brings together some of the leading sports law and governance experts from across Europe. This conference will allow those who practice in the area of sports law\, or those who aspire to do so\, to hear what those involved at the very heart of game believe the future holds for football. \nThis full day conference\, to be held at Hotel Football’s rooftop football pitch overlooking Old Trafford and the city of Manchester\, will allow those with an interest in sports law\, governance and business the opportunity to hear what the leading experts think before debating the same at a drinks reception and networking session. \nThe Conference will be followed by a charity Sportspersons’ Dinner in aid of Headway\, the brain injury charity. The dinner will be a light hearted evening of sports related stories and humour. John Hartson\, formerly Arsenal\, West Ham\, Celtic and Wales\, has kindly agreed to join us to share some stories from his playing days and his insight into the modern game. \nThe Sportspersons’ dinner is open to conference attendees and non-attendees alike so please join us to support this excellent cause. \nConference topics \nThe topics to be discussed include: \n\nBrexit and its implications for football\nFootball Transfer System\nFIFPro Transfer Complaint\nAgent Regulations\nFootball Finance\nFootball Arbitration\nGovernance & Corruption\nFan engagement\nCorruption\n\nConfirmed speakers include: \n\nYves le Lostecque – Head of the Sport Unit of the European Commission\nJane Purdon – Head of Governance\, UK Sport. Former Director of Governance\, Premier League. Former Club Secretary\, Sunderland\nMalcolm Clarke – Chairman of the Football Supporters Federation. Member of the FA Council\nSimon Barker – Assistant Chief Executive of the PFA. A former professional footballer\, Simon is Trustee of the Professional Footballers’ Pension Scheme and National Football Museum. In addition he is a Director of the Professional Players Federation and Sports Dispute Resolution Panel.\nPaul Rawnsley – Director\, Sports Business Group at Deloitte. Paul has been an adviser to UEFA for over ten years\, assisting with the development and implementation of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations across European football. Paul is also an author of the widely acclaimed Deloitte Annual Review of Football Finance and Deloitte Football Money League.\nRoberto Branco Martins – General Manager\, European Football Agent’s Association\nCarol Couse – Consultant at Mills & Reeve LLP with over 13 years of experience in sports law\, both in house and private practice. Carol has particular expertise in football regulatory matters having acted on behalf of football clubs\, managers\, players and agents on domestic and international transfers and in respect of disputes before the Premier League\, The FA\, UEFA\, FIFA and the CAS.\nProfessor Jack Anderson – Professor of Law at Queen’s University\, Belfast.  A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators\, Jack is a panel member on various national sports dispute resolution bodies such as Sports Resolutions (UK) and Just Sport Ireland. He has recently been appointed an arbitrator with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.\nKevin Carpenter – Principal & Consultant Captivate Legal & Sports Solutions. Member of the Mediation Chamber for the Confédération Européenne de Volleyball (CEV). Non Executive Director of Sports Officials UK. Member of the Advisor & Editorial Board for LawInSport Limited. Kevin is an expert on corruption in sport.\nWil van Megen  – Legal Director at FIFPro World Players’ Union\nProfessor Mark James – Director of Research at Manchester Law School. Mark specialises in the area of interaction between the criminal law and sporting events and activities. He is currently focusing his research activity on the Olympic Games in Rio and the European Football Championships in France\, with a particular interest in ambush marketing\, ticket touting and spectator disorder.\nMark Hovell – Partner at Mills & Reeve LLP. Mark specialises in sports law\, regularly advising players’ associations and their members. As a qualified insolvency practitioner he has been involved in over 50 football club insolvencies/ restructurings. Mark is also an arbitrator with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne and has arbitrated on over 60 cases involving a range of sports law matters including a selection of cases for the 2012 Olympics.\nDaniel Geey – Partner In the Sheridans Sport Group. Daniel advises sports/sports clients on competition\, commercial\, regulatory & broadcasting issues. He is also the Chairman of Football Aid.\nAngelique Bret – Partner at Pinsent Masons with over 10 years’ experience advising in relation to UK and EU anti-trust/competition law across all indsutry secotrs\, inclduing sport. Angelique’s experience includes advising clients on the rules relating to the abuse of market power\, anti-competitive agreements and investigations by the competition authorities.\nStuart Baird – Senior associate at Centrefield LLP. Stuart’s practice focuses on regulatory\, contractual\, dispute and disciplinary matters. He also assists a number of governing bodies with the drafting of rules and regulations and is widely regarded as the ‘go to’ sports lawyer for immigration issues.\nSteven Flynn – Head of St John’s Buildings Sport\, Media and Entertainment Law Group. Steven has extensive experience of dealing with both litigious and non-litigious issues in a sporting context. He advises at all levels of sport from employment issues that have arisen in local sports clubs through to the sale of a Premier League Football Club.\n\nWhilst SJB is a corporate enterprise\, this event is not being run for profit. Any money raised from the conference will be donated to the Centre for Sports Law Research for the benefit of students. \nSPORTSPERSONS’ DINNER \nThe Sportspersons’ dinner will be a light hearted evening of sports related stories and humour. Guests will enjoy a three course meal and will hear from our special guest speaker\, John Hartson as well as being entertained by a comedian. \nWe hope that you will join us for this fun evening in aid of Headway\, the brain injury association. \n
