UK Parliament debates blood doping in athletics

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee of the UK Parliament is debating blood doping in athletics this morning, following media articles which alleged that the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) failed to follow up suspicious blood values between 2001 and 2012. The meeting, which takes place at 10am today in the Thatcher Room, Portcullis House (pictured), will hear evidence from Dr. Michael Ashenden, Science and Industry Against Blood Doping (SIAB), Australia; Nicole Sapstead, Chief Executive, UK Anti-Doping (UKAD); David Kenworthy, Chair, UKAD; David Howman, Director General, World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Along with Dr. Robin Parisotto, Dr. Ashenden was an expert used by ARD and the Sunday Times to independently verify whether blood values contained in an IAAF database obtained by investigative journalist Hajo Seppelt were suspicious. The IAAF has rejected the conclusion made by both ARD in its documentary, ‘Geheimsache Doping – Im Schattenreich der Leichtathletik’ and by the Sunday Times in its articles that the values are indicative of blood doping. Dr. Ashenden and Dr. Parisotto have since defended their analysis.
