Sports Integrity Briefs – 21 November 2017

• New Delhi Police have opened a fraud investigation into the ‘Ballet by Sharapova’ apartment complex in Gurgaon, a satellite village of New Delhi, reports AFP. “Any celebrity that supports a product technically becomes an agent of the company”, a lawyer for the prosecution told the news agency. It is understood that developers have abandoned the project, which was scheduled for completion last year. The company behind the project is also responsible for the Michael Schumacher World Tower in Raghopur, which was also scheduled for completion in 2016 and is currently being constructed.

• The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has published a list of sanctions issued to 71 people as of 27 October 2017. The list includes lifetime bans issued to 10 Turkish coaches for administration of a prohibited substance, as well as a four year ban issued to another Turkish coach. • Italy’s national anti-doping tribunal (TNA) has partially accepted the appeal of Giovanni Lattanzi against a six-year ban a six year ban issued in July, reports Italy’s national anti-doping agency (NADO Italia). The masters cyclist will now face a four year ban until 7 March 2021. The TNA also rejected the appeal of track & field athlete Francesco Bassano against a four-year ban issued by NADO Italia. Bassano, 45, will be banned until 3 May 2021.

• Dr. Bernard Sainz, nicknamed Dr. Mabuse, has been arrested in France for the illegal practice of medicine, reports AFP. In September, Sainz was sentenced to nine months in prison for inciting amateur and semi-professional cyclists to dope. He was also sentenced to a year in prison during 2010, after police stopped him for speeding and found prohibited substances in his car.

• The US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) that James Mulheron has returned an adverse analytical finding (AAF) from a 10 November anti-doping test. Mulheron has been removed from the card for the UFC Fight Night: Bisping vs. Gastelum in Shanghai, the UFC said in a statement.

Robinson López, Colombia’s U23 cycling champion, has been sanctioned with a four year ban after returning an AAF for a variant of erythropoietin (EPO) during the last edition of the Tour of Colombia, reports El Tiempo. López rides for the Boyacá Raza de Campeones team and it is understood that he was due to join the Italian UniEuro team.
