Philippines basketball player tests positive for three substances

Kiefer Ravena, a basketball player who competes for the national team, tested positive for three prohibited substances on 25 February and is serving an 18-month suspension, the Philippines basketball association (Samahang Basketbol NG Pilipinas) has confirmed. ‘The federation received a communique from FIBA last March 19 about the results of Ravena’s sample’, read a 28 May statement. ‘Sample A and sample B from the same urine test following the Philippines-Japan match that ended in an 89-84 win for Gilas Pilipinas [national team] tested positive for 4-Methylhexane, 1,3 Dimethylbutylamine, and higenamine’.

Ravena’s suspension began on the date of his AAF and will expire on 24 August 2019. From the Samahang Basketbol statement, it is understood that the national team’s victory over Japan will stand. In a 28 May press conference, Ravena blamed his adverse analytical finding (AAF) on an ‘over the counter drink called “Dust”’. It is understood that Ravena’s team, NLEX Road Warriors, asked Ravena not to play in the 30 May game against Blackwater Elite, whilst it sought clarification from the international federation of basketball associations (FIBA) as to whether his ban is applicable in league games.
