Giuseppe Rossi receives reprimand & two more sanctioned

Genoa forward Giuseppe Rossi has been sanctioned with a reprimand after returning an adverse analytical finding (AAF) for dorzolamide, Italy’s national anti-doping agency (NADO Italia) confirmed. A carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, dorzolamide is listed under section S5 of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Prohibited List, which refers to diuretics and masking agents.

All diuretics and masking agents are prohibited, except in cases of ‘ophthalmic use of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (e.g. dorzolamide, brinzolamide)’. It is understood that Rossi had not indicated any ‘ophthalmic’ use of dorzolamide (the substance is present in eye drops), and so prosecutors had sought a one year ban.

NADO Italia also outlined two sanctions applicable to athletes that had returned an AAF for THC (cannabis). It confirmed that a four month ban has been issued to volleyball star Jiří Kovář, who was provisionally suspended after returning an AAF for a metabolite of THC at a competition hosted in Perugia on 6 May. Andrea Annechini has been sanctioned with a three month ban, NADO Italia announced. The BMX athlete tested positive for a metabolite of THC own 1 July, at the Italian BMX and Cruiser Championships.
